What is a past participle?
A past participle indicates past or completed action or time. It is often called the 'ed' form as it is formed by adding d or ed, to the base form of regular verbs, however it is also formed in various other ways for irregular verbs.
It can be used to form a verb phrase as part of the present perfect tense.
For example:-
I have learnt English. (Learnt is part of the verb phrase 'have learnt')
It can be used to form the passive voice.
For example:-
Her hair was well brushed.
It can also be used as an adjective.
For example:-
As an adjective: He had a broken arm. (Broken is used here as an adjective.)
Here is a comprehensive list of irregular verbs.
What is a past perfect?
In general, what we use for actions that have occurred before another action in the past. Just as in the present perfect, past perfect form with the auxiliary verb "to have" and the past participle. The auxiliary verb will be in the past
Subject | Auxiliary | Short Form | Past Participle |
I, You, He, She, It, We, They | had | I'd, you'd, he'd, she'd, it'd, we'd, they'd | studied, visited, worked... |
Note: Be careful: the contraction " -""d" is also used with the modal verb "would" to form the conditional. As such, the short form "I will be "d" you can have two different meanings. We can distinguish between these two meanings of the shape of the main verb that follows them.
What is a passive voice?
In the passive voice emphasizes the action and not who performs it. In the passive sentence who performs the action lacks any importance or is unknown. As in english, the passive voice is formed with the verb "to be will be" (be) and the past participle. They made this car in 1963. (Active) This car was made in 1963. (Passive) The subject of a verb in passive corresponds to the object of a verb active.
n the forms of ' progressive future ' (will be Being + pp) and 'perfect progressive ' ( you Has Been Being + pp) is not very common use.
To say who did the action or what caused it , use 'by' .
Example:
This house was built by my mother .
Washington was bombed by Pakistan .
The passive voice is often used when mentioning know or do not care who or what is doing the action .
It's normal to find in Spanish forms with ' it ' , eg ' talking '' to rent ' or plural verbs as ' sold ', ' buy ' .
Example:
German is spoken here / Here German spoken
When was this house built ? / When constructed (it was built ) this house ?
A lot of songs written about love Have Been / were written many songs about love
What is a tag question?
English is often finish sentences with another short sentence , of opposite sign, which is intended to seek the views or seek the approval of the interlocutor : question tags are called (questions tagline ) . These phrases are equivalent to right ?, is not it ?, no ?, is not it? Really?
Examples:
*She does not like to dance , does she ?
*Alex and Sergio are friends , are not They?
To form this short question use the ancillary to the main sentence and its subject but opposite . If I had no assistant then we would use the auxiliary "to do " . If prayer is affirmative , the question tagline is negative and vice versa.
